Minutes Meeting 14 October 2004

Venue:  Thierry et Genevieve Powis (for which many thanks)

Present:  Thierry, Genevieve, Philip, Alex, Tom, Theo

Apologies: Tim, Mark

MIA: Ian

1.      Minutes of previous meeting of 22/01/04 already approved & posted

2.  Handicaps

The ladies race, as intended, does  not affect handicaps, but raised the issue of the minimum number of finishers required for handicaps to be adjusted.  The rule is believed to be 4.  A vessel who did not sailed competitively in the last 6 months  should return to on trial status, perhaps.  The 3 starters rule is clear, but some fog prevails in the general area of local rules. Alex will compile and publish the known JOSC standing rules for all to study and comment on (if provoked).

2.      HM7

Rather than a pursuit as requested by some skippers, the new extra leg course will be sea trialed as it has not yet been attempted since all the faster boats retired with technical failures before the start of the Ladies

3.   Memorial Trophy races

The last race will this year be designated the Jan Dienaar Memorial for which a trophy will be created.  It was agreed that in future both the Peter Jackson and Jan Dienaar memorial races would be the last races in their series to provide motivation, even if the series has already been won. Peter Jackson for the SK Series and Jan Dienaar for the HM series.  Members were asked either not to leave us for the great cruising grounds in the sky or to draw a line before we run out of races to memorialize!  The Carlo Visioli Challenge (P. Babi) should be held annually, and so should the Noordwachter and the Moonfleet cruising trophy (wherever the trophy actually is – does anybody know?  Caroline to be contacted by Theo) should also be awarded, but perhaps transferred to other events given the total lack of participation over the last 5 years at least.  How can we revive these OFFSHORE thrillers?

A prize for the best race report (which could include pictures) was discussed and unanimously supported.

4. Where is Ian Swan?

We need to get in touch with him as he owns the funds of the club.

5.   Lebaran

‘sembako’ (rice, sugar etc.) gifts will be distributed to boat boys et al. as per   last  year.

6.  AGM 2004

To be held on 27th November.  Who will organise it in the absence of Mark? Tim?  Committee to phone current and past members and other likely prospects to remind / invite them.  Venues should be checked out, such as the German pub next to the Brasserie and Pasir Pitih.

Some memories and comments will be shared during this year’s AGM in remembrance of lost JOSC heros, Carlo Visioli, Peter Jackson and Jan Dienaar.

7.      APLI membership will be renewed by the Commodore for all JOSC boats.

8.   Participation and Abandoned Ships

A number of yachts lie idle waiting for buyers.  Can they be made active participants again under a Maintain & Use agreement while awaiting Sale and Purchase?

Makan Angin, Boracho, and Alice are all up for sale.  Their owners would no doubt agree to send JOSC a POA or similar document to allow this.  (Nirvana already has such an arrangement, apparently).  Who could be recruited to sail them in JOSC races?  Can any of the other yachts be persuaded to race, such as Mimi etc.?

9.  New Webmaster?

In the event our Dear Commodore and Revered Membership secretary have to leave us, who can take over web maintenance duties?

The cost of adding a hit counter to be investigated by Thierry.

10.  Pantai Mutiara

Alternative yacht parking possibilities remain unappealing on inspection.  Since the ‘world standard’ development plans for PM have been shelved, an approach to Ferdinandus will be attempted to explore the reestablishment of a long term discount regime.

11.  JOSC Mysteries

Where are: the slings, the swager, the 100+ 1995 Bali – Jakarta Race Ts (and the Financial Officer at that time who absconded with the books), the MoonFleet Trophy, Ian Swann?  Any intelligence on the foregoing and any other JOSC mysteries to the committee, please

- Boat owners should hold the line to preserve the bargaining strength of a collective

  stand on the issues.

- Jl. Donggala to be contacted as they have expressed interest and may offer better rates.

6.      2004 Calendar changes:

·         SK1 this year was also the Peter Jackson Trophy Race, but in future years the PJTR will be the first race of the year, a separate event, not part of the SK series.

·         SK 2 2004 will be a pursuit race with staggered starts according to handicaps.

·         On April 9, 10, 11 (a long weekend) there will be an island race(s), details to be forthcoming.

·         May 1,2,3 is reserved for the 140 NM Noordwachter (sp.?) race.

·         Parties will be organized after each series for trophy giving and any other excuse we can think of.

Suggestions regarding more variety in the sailing events would be welcome, e.g. cruise out to an island on Friday or Saturday and race back on Sunday, start at anchor (Le Mans start?) etc.
